Safety Professional of the Year
2014 Safety Director of the Year
 Sharon Bonnette
 Preferred Materials

Sharon Bonnette

Preferred Materials, Inc.

2014 LMTA Safety Director of the Year

Sharon Bonnette, LMTA’s 2014 Safety Professional of the Year, has twenty-five years of experience in transportation, with expertise in Federal and State motor carrier rules and regulations – and especially in commercial vehicle safety audits and inspections. Sharon is a certified FMCSA Safety Auditor with eight years of experience.

Sharon’s interest in the commercial motor vehicle industry began when she married a truck driver and took calls from his dispatcher for loads from their house as a young wife.  A few years later she and her husband established their own LP gas company in Minden.  There she began to learn the regulations and to understand exactly what was required of motor carriers.  Her husband was her greatest motivator and he always encouraged and inspired her to try her best.  One of his favorite sayings was that if you learn something new then you’ve had a good day!  Some year’s later Sharon lost her husband, but by that time she knew being involved in the motor carrier industry was where she belonged.

In 2003 Sharon moved to Florida and applied to work for the Florida DOT as a Compliance Officer.  She was hired and worked there until 2005 when she was offered an opportunity to work for Consolidated Safety Services, a company that had just landed contracts with FMCSA to conduct New Entrant Audits.  Once she was certified by FMCSA to conduct New Entrant Audits she chose Louisiana to apply her newfound knowledge…and move back to her home state.  She continued to perform audits until the company lost their contract.

A significant moment in her career came with Kary Bryce owner of Preferred Materials, Inc. (PMI) in Minden called to discuss the possibility of Sharon taking the position of Safety Director.  Sharon accepted and stepped into a challenging but exciting time in her life.  Kary encouraged her to get involved in LMTA where she completed the 2013 Leadership LMTA program and participates in the Safety Management Council.

Kary Bryce, owner of PMI says that Sharon is loyal and dedicated…always up for the task at hand.  She can be stern when necessary but is always understanding and fair.  Sharon is well respected in the industry and brings a Wealth of knowledge to their company.  She is an accomplished safety director, a great mentor, a true friend and a valuable asset to Preferred Materials

Sharon continues to conduct safety audits for the Department of Defense through Consolidated Safety.  She credits her current success to the support of the owners and staff of PMI.

Sharon’s three children also understand her passion for the industry as they grew up in a home that revolved around trucking.  She says that she has always been blessed with a family and friends that encouraged her to move forward and to do what she believes is the right thing and being recognized as the LMTA Safety Professional of the Year is the highlight of her career.

Tammy Z. Cedotal

Arabie Trucking Service, LLC

Tammy Z. Cedotal of Arabie Trucking Service, LLC, LMTA’s 2013 Safety Professional of the Year, developed a deep respect for commercial truck drivers at an early age that provided an appreciation for the industry and the obstacles facing their families.  As a result, Tammy meets with company drivers each week just to listen and to get an idea of what is going on in their lives – both personally and professionally.  Coordinating with dispatch to ensure compliance with the various agencies that govern our industry and going the extra mile to do whatever is necessary to solve problems sets this year’s Safety Director of the Year apart.

Tammy’s responsibilities include safety management and human resources:  processing all incoming personnel, providing claims management, CSA management and scheduling and leading safety meetings.  As a result her conscientious leadership, Arabie Trucking Service was able to reduce their OSHA recordable case rate by 46% and continue on this downward trend.  This was accomplished by focusing on the top safety issue – motor carrier accidents.  They also saw a 56% decrease in medical treatment case rate and other vehicle liability claims decreased by 29%.  After enduring yearly audits performed by various insurance companies, OSHA audits and three DOT audits – one that left the company with a conditional rating – immediate improvements were made to their programs to become more compliant and the company’s satisfactory rating was reinstated.  Tammy is currently coordinating a health and wellness program throughout the company with the intention to reduce these numbers even more significantly.

Tammy Z. Cedotal is a graduate of the 2012 Leadership LMTA Program and an active member of the LMTA Safety Management Council.  She has 2 children and lives with her husband Gerard in Thibodaux, LA.
