The 2011 Louisiana Motor Transport Association (LMTA) Truck Driving Championships were held in Baton Rouge, LA on June 3-4. Ninety-one (91) drivers totaling approximately 114,236,739 accident free miles participated in this year’s event. The following winners will represent LMTA and the state of Louisiana in the 2011 American Trucking Associations’ National Truck Driving Championships in Orlando on August 9-13.
The Truck Driving Championships is designed to test a driver’s knowledge and skill in a three-part challenge consisting of a written examination, pre-trip inspection and field test. The written exam is an hour-long, four-part test that measures a driver’s knowledge of the trucking industry, safe driving rules, first aid and fire-fighting. The pre-trip inspection tests the driver’s ability to make a thorough pre-trip inspection requiring them to find seventeen (17) defects planted on test vehicles within a limited time. Finally, on the field test course the driver must drive their vehicle through a course with six problems designed to simulate conditions they may encounter during their everyday operation of a truck. The driver is judges on his or her ability to handle the vehicle and ability to just distances and clearance. This year’s problems included the Rear Stop, Serpentine, Right Turn, Side Stop, Right Steer Tire Scale and Front Stop.
The winners in each class are determined by totaling the scores of all three tests. The Mechanics Award is given to the person who has the highest score on the pre-trip inspection. The Rookie of the Year is the driver with the highest score among those who are participating in a truck driving championships for the first time. The Team Award if given to the company has the overall highest average score based on the scores of all drivers competing from that company. The Grand Champion is the driver who receives the highest overall score during the competition.
